The Performance of Ceramic Alumina Abrasive Particles can be improved by adding partially brittle molten alumina to form composite abrasive wheels. At this time, it is necessary to know the cutting arc length of the grinding wheel on the workpiece, so as to determine the grinding wheel proportion. Silicon carbide: SiC abrasive has a naturally sharp shape. Suitable for grinding hard materials (such as cemented carbide). Because of its sharpness, it is also suitable for processing very soft materials, such as aluminum, polymers, rubber, low strength steel, copper alloys and plastics.
Diamond: Both natural and synthetic diamonds can be used for grinding. Diamond is an ultra-high hardness form of carbon. Because it has affinity to iron (steel is an alloy of iron and carbon) and forms rapid wear, it is not suitable for machining ferrous materials, but diamond is especially suitable for grinding non-ferrous materials, titanium, ceramics and cermets. CBN: Like diamond, CBN is a very expensive abrasive.
The price of a super hard abrasive wheel is more than 50 times higher than that of a common abrasive wheel, but its service life is more than 100 times higher than that of a common abrasive wheel. Even if the hardest steel is ground, it is only slightly worn. CBN is most suitable for machining ferrous materials, especially when the shape of the grinding wheel is required to be maintained for a long time, such as the grinding of the raceway in the bearing. In addition, CBN is more suitable for the process of infrequent wheel replacement, because small batches and wheel replacement require dressing during installation, which is the main factor leading to wheel consumption.
Because CBN will react with water at high temperature and accelerate wear, ethylene glycol or oil should be used. The bond of ordinary grinding wheel can be ceramic, resin or plastic, while the bond of super hard abrasive can be covered on the grinding wheel by sintered metal matrix or electroplating nickel layer. This kind of grinding wheel is impermeable and free from cavities.
The grinding fluid of metal bond and electroplated grinding wheel shall be carefully selected to prevent the grinding wheel from slipping. The huge dynamic hydraulic pressure generated at the cutting arc during slipping will lift the grinding wheel, leading to deterioration of the workpiece finish and acceleration of the grinding wheel wear.
